T G Green Sark

I have previously written about the T G Green Channel Islands series by Judith Onions and Martin Hunt c1968. This now quite rare series consisted of 5 very bold designs with completely different designs, and one of them was SARK – which I have only ever come across in person once previously. Each of the series was made in several colours – Honey, Grey, Blue, Green, Brown and Orange.

I recently found 2 Sark pieces picture below in the first 2 photographs – in the lovely honey and black colour.  I love the deeply carved ridges on this design and the black banding which really sets the design off. Also quite beautiful is the finely textured chamotte style clay which shows through the semi transparent honey coloured glaze.

I had never seen this design in other colours until I was searching the web and found a Sark variation in grey on Etsy, also pictured below. The white banding detail on this version against the grey glaze makes for a really timeless yet contemporary design I think.

Bing & Grondahl “Tivoli”

Bing & Grondahl “Tivoli”

This very smart design from Bing & Grondahl is called “Tivoli”, and was designed by Martin Hunt c1970s.

Martin Hunt, Co-Designer of the award winning Hornsea Lancaster Vitramic and a huge number of other Hornsea designs  – also designed several dinnerware series for Bing and Grondahl and Rosenthal. The Bing & Grondahl designs  include Tivoli, Korinth and Cumulus (decoration by Carl Harry-Stalhane) .

The same forms Martin Hunt designed for Tivoli were also used on the series Delphi, Olympia,  Sahara, Troja, Corinth, Marrakech and Casablanca. All of these designs are now quite hard to get hold of.

If you want to see more Martin Hunt designs go to the V&A collections online here for Martin. They have a very large collection of his designs from the 1970s until current day, including some of the B&G designs mentioned above.

T G Green Channel Islands Series

T G Green Channel Islands Series

Judith Onions had already successfully restyled the Cornish Ware range in 1968 when she was joined by Martin Hunt RDI to design an entirely new range.

They produced four clear, bold and very British designs (each with a very different pattern). They named them after the English Channel Islands Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and later Herm.

Pieces in the Jersey and Sark designs seem to be the easiest to get hold of these days. My favourites are the blue Jersey and Sark in any colour as it has such a fantastic texture created by the ribbed design.

Each of The Channel Islands designs was produced in a number of colours – Honey, Grey, Blue, Green, Brown & Orange.
