Richard Manz, Denmark

Richard Manz, Denmark

Richard Manz (1933-1999), husband of Danish ceramicist icon Bodil Manz.

In earlier years Richard worked in Sweden, and even at Gustavsberg for a time. He also studied under Peter Voulkos at Berkeley University of California with his wife Bodil in the late 1960s.

In 1967 he started a studio with his wife Bodil in Starreklinte, Odsherred. They produced several joint works including murals and large sculptural pieces in addition to developing their individual styles. During this period Richard also produced work for Knabstrup pottery in Denmark. You can see some of them on this page

In the mid 1970s they both lived in the town of Arita, Japan for a while – learning the skill of working with very fine translucent porcelain.

The first piece below is one I bought at auction some time ago. I think demonstrates Richard’s mastery of the cylindrical form, for which he (and Bodil) have become so well known for.

While it is a stoneware piece, it is beautifully thin and fine and has been fired to the upper limit for stoneware (around 1300c) making it very hard (and giving it a beautiful sound if you “ping” it) .

The piece displays an obvious mastery of form and the beautifully controlled textures and glazes. I am guessing it would be from the early 1970s.

Gunter Praschak, Knabstrup Denmark Wall Plaques

Gunter Praschak (1940- 2015 ), Wall Plaques

Gunter Praschak was a highly accomplished ceramicist and educator, with a large body of work which is well represented in galleries in Europe and the U.S.A. /Canada.

Im a lover of 20th Century wall plaques, and I am drawn to the wall plaques by Praschack which were produced during his time at Knabstrup Pottery in Denmark. His wall plaque designs are of animals and insects, some naturalistic – but the majority are stylised and bold, and typically mid-century in their design.

You can see the majority of his Knabstrup wall plaque designs on THIS highly informative and authoritative Danish website all about Knabstrup and its history.

Gunter’s association with Knabstrup as a ceramic designer was between 1964 – 1970. During this time he also had his own studio in Copenhagen.

Piotr Baro 1924-1998 , arrived in Denmark in 1957 as a political refugee from Poland, and went on to become a well known illustrator and designer, and worked also as a teacher at Grafiske Højskole.

As a designer, he is best known for imaginative and bold ceramic designs – usually wall plaques – produced at the Danish ceramics factory Knabstrup pottery. These designs really stand out from the crowd with their very stylised illustrations, often depicting animals or mythical creatures.

Most of the plaque designs you will come across are in striking black and white – but many of these designs were also produced in blue and white, although they are much harder to find.
