Karen Margrethe Karberg
Karen Margrethe Karberg (1913-1987) started her own pottery studio in 1946 in Horsens, Jutland, Denmark – after she had been part of a cooperative in Copenhagen called JOSKA. (Joska Keramik operated from 1939-1959 in Copenhagen and was founded by Jonna Luthoft, Sven Nielsen, Karen Margrethe Karberg )

I haven’t found much else documented about the studio work of Karen Karberg, but I have come across several beautiful pieces from her hand all with this beautiful repeat pattern of “dancing ladies” like the beautiful large bowl in the first 2 images below:

This high fired hard earthenware bowl with a fajance glaze has a design Karen is known for, of dancing ladies with large patterned skirts. The colours are beautifully subtle shades of warm grey and a hint of olive green in some areas – still contemporary today. This piece is probably from the late 1950s 1960s. I have also seen the same design in tones of blue on various pieces.
Another piece I have had is the lovely lidded sugar bowl below:

All of Karen’s pieces from her studio appear to have the same KMK cypher:

A search on Etsy found this beautiful piece by Karen in the Etsy store of DanishMood

While doing a bit of web searching for information about Karen, I came across THIS article in a Danish Newspaper, which has some great photographs and information about an existing book and proposed book on the potteries of Horsens, including that of KMK. (Translates well in Google) – I haven’t been able to locate any copies of these books however.
…and finally this beatiful teapot by Karen, I found on World Antique Net HERE
