Gustavsberg Vardag

This elegant design is new to me, and one of those stunning Scandinavian designs than can slip past you easily if not paying attention. I saw this lone bowl sitting for auction at a local auction house, and something about it captured my attention.

It is called “Vardag”, and was designed by Karin Björquist for Gustavsberg Sweden in 1955.

Vardag was in production from 1958 to 1975.

It was a stoneware series in a semi transparent deep and glossy moss green glaze, with a superb design detail of white rims and a relief medallion stamped on the side of many of the pieces.

The pieces have a lovely solid and weighty yet very elegant feel to them….and pieces like the bowl in the first images below are beautiful in the hand.

The design represents well the Nordic practice of creating beautiful yet functional every day goods, accessible to everyone.

Originally just dinnerware pieces were produced in the series and later baking dishes, and serve-ware pieces were added to the series due to its popularity.

It is well worth heading over to the web page about Karin on the Mother Sweden website HERE and have a look at some of her other beautiful designs while there.
