Nis Stougard Denmark
Nis Stougaard (1906-1987), Denmark, was both a potter and painter, and additionally was artistic director at Soholm Pottery during the 1940´s where he helped develop many of their products during this period.
Later he established his own studio pottery in the town of Svaneke (Bornholm) where his son Peter Stougaard (1940-2006) and granddaughter Anne (1963 -) also went on to become potters. Nis’ granddaughter Pernille Stougaard (1965 – ) was trained in both glass and ceramics and also works on Bornholm currently I believe.
I have been lucky enough to come across a few items of Nis Stougaard pottery over the years:
Firstly the beautifully designed wall plaques below, depicting village scenes on the island of Bornholm.

These Wall Plaques by Nis Stougaard depicting life on Bornholm appear to have been very popular going by the numbers or them which appear online for sale from time to time. I found the group below on Auctionnet, which seem to be quite representative of his distinctive, almost “cubist” style which really suits this style of ceramic wall art.

The other piece I have been fortunate enough to find is the jug below, which seems typical of the vessel style Nis produced.

You can also find pieces by Nis on Etsy from time to time like this one I found with a quick search:

Nis was quite a multi talented Artist and Potter. The painting below by Nis’ from his time at Soholm Pottery was gifted to the Bornholm Musuem, c2009
